Abstract
COVID-19 or the Coronavirus Disease 2019 is a pandemic and a very new disease which has been having a worldwide effect since December 2019. It has disastrous effects in many countries, but with pregnancy, its effects are still under evaluation. Retrospective and cross sectional study in NEMCH, (Obstetrics and Gynecology department) which is a tertiary level hospital and a referral center for COVID-19 patients in Sylhet, was done during the 2 peek attacks of COVID-19 to see the effects of the disease to the pregnant women and the newborns. Total 106 patients admitted with COVID-19 symptoms were included in the study to see the maternal and fetal outcome.
Total 106 patients were admitted with COVID-19 symptoms in the study period. Majority of the patients (n=95) were with obstetric problems, where their main presenting complaints were fever (n=37) with loose motion, cough, respiratory distress, body ache and sore throat as presenting symptoms in decreasing serial. Majority were managed in Gynae and Obstetric department alone (n=101=95%) and 5 patients were referred to different departments. Off the patients, 65 were managed conservatively and the rest needed operative or non-operative managements. Maternal outcomes include 14 cases of pre-eclampsia, which was the most common of the complications and among fetal complications fetal distress topped the complications with 14 cases which were followed by Low birth weight with 8 cases.
Conclusion: SARS-Cov-2 or the COVID-19, the pandemic has created a catastrophic effect in the world and the humanity. Though its effect with patients of pregnancy is not clear till now and this study is also done in only one center which will not depict the bigger picture of the disease condition and needs nationwide study to find the proper situation.
