Abstract
To compare the efficacy of Povidone iodine solution with dry cord care in preventing umbilical sepsis, this interventional study was done at the Neonatology & Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. Healthy neonate (both term & preterm upto 34 weeks gestation) were included. Data were collected using pre-tested structured questionnaire and analysed by computer based programme statistical package for social science (SPSS) for window version 16. A P value 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Healthy neonates were identified in 2 groups (Group A-72 cases with Povidone iodine and Group B-72 cases with dry cord). There was no significant difference in local defection rate between group group A and group B which included redness (12.70% vs 15.00 swelling (9.23% vs 11.67%), discharge (7.69% vs 15.00%) and tenderness (9.23% 13.33%) respectively on day 4. Systemic infection rate was also not significant in group A and group B which which included excessive crying (4.61% vs 13.03%), reluctant to feed (9.23% vs 11.67%), pallor (8.82% vs 18.46) jaundice (12.30% vs 18.33%), fever (0% vs 3.33%), reflexes (4.06% vs 9.33) respectively on day 4. According to present study there was no significant difference between povidone iodione group and dry cord group. The use of Povidone iodine solution can not significantly reduses rate of infection in neonate. This study was single hospital based, so community-based research is needed to define the relationship between antimicrobial use and cord infection
