Abstract
Road traffic accidents (RTA) are a major, but neglected global health problem, requiring concerned efforts for effective and sustainable prevention. A retrospective autopsy reports based study conducted to find out the magnitude and pattern of causes of deaths due to road traffic accident (RTA) in the Department of Forensic Medicine of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College during the study period January 2017 to December 2018. Among the all postmortem cases, 201 death cases were found due to RTA during the study period. Age incidence was higher 20.90% in 60 years and 19.40% in the age group of 50-59 years and sex distribution 136(67.66%) males and 65(32.34%) females indicating a male: female ratio of nearly 2:1. More than half (56.72%) of the postmortem done under the Kotwali police station. Injuries in the skull and scalp region were observed in majority (89.55%) of cases. It was found that almost all cases were suffered from multiple types of injuries. Among the injury types, bruise (95.52%) and abrasion (88.06%) found in the majority of the cases. The highest number (88.56%) of the cases was observed died due to hemorrhage and shock. Legal enforcement is not just enough to cut down such mortalities, this requires multi-dimensional approach to bring awareness among the public about road safety measures and road safety education to drivers.
