Abstract
Dilatation and curettage (D&C) is a common gynaecological procedure that generally causes considerable pain. Propofol is a widely used agent with rapid onset of action that may cause cardiovascular and respiratory depression in a dose dependent manner. These unwanted effects may be reduced when used in association with ketamine. In this study, we aimed to compare propofol with ketamine-propofol combination (ketofol) in respect to the hemodynamic state and recovery times from sedation in D&C. This randomized case-control study was performed on 60 patients, who underwent D&C procedure. Patients were randomized to propofol (P) and ketofol (KP) groups. The heart rate, mean arterial blood pressures and peripheral oxygen saturation were recorded. In recovery room, the pain was assesed by visual analogue scale and the patient’s and surgeon’s satisfactions were assesed by Aldrete scoring system and post anesthesia discharge scoring system. Demographic data were found similar in two groups. There were no significant differences in heart rate and arterial blood pressures in all time intervals among groups. Orientation time was significantly increased in Group P compared to Group KP. Aldrete score at 5th minute was statistically decreased in Group P though visual analogue scale at 5th and 10th minute were statistically increased in this Group. There was no significant difference among groups in regard to satisfaction scores. According to the present study, Ketamine-propofol combination has a shorter mean orientation time with similar hemodynamic stability and satisfaction scores in D&C procedure.
