Abstract
Cervical cancer is one of the major causes of death among women, especially prevalent in developing countries like Bangladesh. This study was designed to determine the accuracy of combined Pap smear cytology and colposcopy in detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cancer. A total of 100 cases of different age group were selected from patients those attended in the Gynaecology and obstetrics outpatient department of M A G Osmani Medical College, Sylhet during the period from January 2008 to December 2008. After collecting paps smear, colposcopic examination was done and finally colposcope directed biopsy materials were taken. Cervical smear was stained with Papanicolaou stain and biopsy specimen was processed with Haematoxylin and Eosin stain. Histopathology is considered as gold standard and pap smear and colposcopy were compared with it. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative positive predictive value and accuracy were 71.42%, 100%, 100%, 93.33% and 94.28% respectively. Present study suggests that, sequential use of Pap smear cytology and colposcopy in cervical cancer screening improve the accuracy.
Key words: Pap smear, colposcopy, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer.
