Abstract
Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) describes acute, transient airway narrowing during exercise. It can occur in individuals with or without asthma. It may be the most common cause of asthma symptoms for teenagers and young adults. EIB may occur both in general population and in highly trained athlete. Objectives: To observe the effect of exercise on pulmonary functions in young healthy adult male in order to find out EIB positive subjects. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka from Ist January, 2009 to 31st December, 2009. For this a total number of 40 apparently healthy young adult male age ranged from 20-25 years were selected by simple random sampling method. Pulmonary parameters like FEV1 and PEFR of all these subjects were measured both before and after exercise by Digital Spirometer. Pre-exercise values were treated as control value (Group A) and post exercise values were considered as study value (Group B). Study values were taken at 5min, 10min and 15 min of post exercise period. Statistical data analysis was done by one way ANOVA test and ‘z’ test as applicable.
Result: In this study, 7.5% subjects were EIB positive by 15% reduction of FEV1 and 10% subjects were EIB positive by 20% reduction of PEFR. Conclusion: Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction may occur even in apparently healthy individuals.
