Abstract
Smoking is one of the environmental factors which con alter normal lipid profile. It is one of the major risk factors in the genesis of coronary atherosclerosis and development of coronary heart disease. The present study is aimed to compare the lipid profile between smoker and non smoker. A total of 50 subjects were involved in the study. 25 healthy males who were smoking 8-10 sticks of cigarette per day were selected as the study group (smoker) and 25 healthy non-smoker males who never smoked cigarette were selected as the control group (non-smoker). Fasting lipid profile was analyzed on auto analyzer. The data was analyzed using SPSS software version 22. All data were expressed in terms of mean±SD and differences were considered significant if P-value was 0.05 or low. This study showed that the levels of triglycerides, LDL, and TC were significantly higher among smokers compared to non-smokers. Anti atherogenic HDL levels were lower among smokers. So it may be concluded that the alteration of lipid profile level in smokers have raised serious medical concern with respect to atherogenic risk and recommendation for counselling the smokers to quit smoking and routine evaluation of serum lipid profile has been suggested.
Key words: Triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, coronary artery diseases, free fatty acids.
