Abstract
This was a comparative study, conducted in the Department of Microbiology, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, to assess the sero-prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antibody in the first year Male and Female MBBS students of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College. Students during their stay in the campus may acquire this infection through close contact or may indulge in activities involving intimate person to person contact increasing the likelihood of transmission of EBV. Objectives of the study were also to compare the serological status of two groups (First Year MBBS Male and Female Students) against EBV and whether any difference could be related to any socio-demographic parameters. In this study the prevalence rate of anti-EBV titer was found to be higher in male students. Sero-prevalence of anti-EBV (IgG antibody) among the first year male and female MBBS students were 53.2% and 46.8% respectively. The difference was statistically significant in chi-square test (p <0.002).
Key Words: Sero-prevalence, IgG antibody, Epstein-Barr Virus
