Abstract
Wound infection is one of the most common causes of mortality and prolonged hospital stay worldwide. The emergence of antimicrobial resistant strains of bacteria poses a serious threat in the eradication of hospital acquired infections. The objective of this study is to find the most common bacterial isolates in the wound swab samples & to assess their antibiotic sensitivity patterns. This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in department of Microbiology, Jalalabad Ragib Rabeya Medical College Hospital in Sylhet from 1st July 2024 to 30th June 2025 by using convenient sampling.
Most of the bacteria showed high resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Among 99 organism isolated. Gram negative bacteria were predominant (73.7%) than gram positive bacteria (26.3%). Higher generation antimicrobial agents like Meropenem and Imipenem are still effective against most of the organisms. Gram negative bacteria were mostly resistant to Amoxicillin followed by Fluroquinolones, Cotrimoxazole and Ceplaosporins whereas Piperacillin /Tazobactum were the most effective drugs against them. Staphylococcus aureus sensitivity to Vancomycin was 100%. Staphylococcus aureus were also mostly sensitive to Linezolid (70%).
Conclusion: Early detection & appropriate antibiotic application remain a significant priority in controlling the development & spread of multidrug resistant bacteria.
