Abstract
Among the head and Neck cancers, pyriform cancer is the most common and still an important cause of mortality and morbidity in developing countries. Despite improvement in overall survival for pyriform cancer, the locally advanced cancer remains essentially incurable. This Quasi-experimental study was carried out from January 2009 to December 2009 to compare the effect of concurrent chemo radiotherapy followed by radiotherapy in locally advanced pyriform fossa cancer. A total number of 70 patients 35 in each arm having locally advanced pyriform fossa cancer were included in the study. The main objectives of this study were to assess the response and early toxicities in both concurrent chemo radiation and radiation therapy. The following observations and results were obtained in this study, the mean age of the patients was 57.2+7.8 years ranging from 40 to 70 years. The mean age of the group A was 57.3+84 years and group B was 57.0+7.3 years. Highest percentage of the patients were in the age 50-59 years in Arm A. whereas it was highest in age 60 years and above in group B (46.7%). The most common presenting symptoms were cervical lymphadenopathy, sore throat and hoarseness of voice Overall response of patients treated with concurrent chemo radiation was better than in comparison to only radiotherapy. Toxicities were more in concurrent chemo radiation but manageable.
