Abstract
This descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College from January 2011 to December 2015 with a sample size of 491 using a structured data sheet. The demographic characteristics of the suicide victims were first compared among all groups. Suicidal hanging accounts for 15% of all autopsies done during the study period. There were 273 (56%) females and 218 (44%) males among the total 491 victims. Illiterates (51.53%) committed suicide most whereas educated were less likely to commit suicide (H.S.C 10.59%). While age group was considered, 64.53% female committed suicide in the 10-20 years age group, but males committed suicide more in the age group of 20-30 years (50.22%). Married women committed suicide most (96.46%) and most of them were within the age group of 20-30 years. About 59% of the victims were from rural area. The purpose of present study was to illustrate the characteristics of suicide attempters; the understanding would potentially improve the situation and hence would help to prevent the occurrence of suicide.
