Abstract
Labour pain is most severe pain that women will endure their lifetime. Pain during child birth is a well known cause of dissatisfaction amongst women in labour. Quality of labour analgesia plays a vital role in the fetomaternal outcome. Epidural analgesia is widely used as an effective method of pain relief in labour. If it administered timely and maintain drug dose properly, it provides almost complete relief of pain during labour. For this purpose. Twenty four healthy term parturient with age between 21 to 30 years with a cephalic singleton pregnancy from 37-40 weeks gestation were enrolled in our study fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This cross sectional observational study was carried out from January 2017 to July 2018 in the Department of Anesthesia, in collaboration with Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Jalalabad Ragib Rabeya Medical College Hospital, Sylhet. The mean ages of the patients were 23.9 ± 1.4 Years. Mode of delivery was spontaneous vaginal delivery in 12 patients (50%), forceps delivery in 4 patients (16.66%), ventouse in 5 patients (20.83%), and caesarean section in 3 patients (12.5%). At one minute majority of the babies (n 14, 58.33%) had Apgar score more than 7, only 2 babies (8.33%) had Apgar score less than 5, and 8 babies (33.33%) had Apgar score between 5-7. At 5 minutes, majority of the babies (n 20. 83.33%) had Apgar score more than 7, only one baby (4:16%), had Apgar score less than 5, and 3 babies (12.5%) had Apgar score between 5-7. Although pain sensation is a response of the total personality and a subjective phenomenon, an epidural analgesia is used to make women more comfortable during labour. However, our study indicates that, knowledge and practice of epidural analgesia among parturient are low. It can be associated with increase duration of second stage of labour but not associated with fetal compromise in a properly managed patient. The study shows that epidural labour analgesia is acceptable to women in our setting with good fetomaternal outcome.
