Abstract
This short review investigates the evolution and antimicrobial resistance of one of the most successful bacteria in the world, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The bacterium has used many mechanisms to evade the human immune system and against many antibiotics used to treat the diseases caused by it. This review aims to understand its evolution and the mechanisms it used to counter so many potent antibiotics over almost a century. It also aims to provide a timeline of the evolution of antibiotic resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and discusses the possibility of gaining crucial knowledge about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) from studying this organism’s evolution and resistance mechanisms.
Key Words: Neisseria gonorrheoeae, evolution, antibiotic resistance.
