Abstract
The objective of this study is to define optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with urachal anomalies. The medical records of 6 patients 10 to 25yrs of age who had undergone surgery for urachal anomalies at North east medical college hospital (NEMCH) from July 2008 to June 2013 were reviewed. The subjects included 4 male and 2 female (M: F = 2:1). The 3 types of urachal anomalies confirmed were urachal cysts in 4 patients, patent urachus in 1 and urachal sinus in 1 patient. Urachal anomalies were diagnosed by ultrasonography in 6 patients, and 5 patients by computed tomography. All the patients diagnosed are confirmed by surgical exploration. Excision was performed in all patients. Umbilical discharge was the most common clinical manifestation in our patients, suggesting that ultrasonography be performed in patients with umbilical discharge to differentiate urachal anomalies and CT scan when necessary. We found the most common anomaly is the urachal cyst and all patients were successfully treated by surgical excision.
