Abstract
Intra-operative cytology plays an important role in the management of surgical patients. This type of cytology comprises imprint cytology and smear cytology. As it is subjected to many limitations in comparison to the paraffin embedded tissue sections, this review aims to highlight the important concepts and principles of intra-operative cytological consultation. This will then allow the end-users of this technique to be more informed and more selective in their decisions when requesting for an intraoperative cytological report.
Key words: Intraoperative cytology, smear cytology, imprint cytology.
