Abstract
Objective: To assess prevalence and adverse effects of smoking among villagers of two selected villages in Sylhet District. Materials and method: The study was conducted from August 2012 to October 2013. The place of study was two selected villages named Asamhampara Ashrayan and Guchchhogram under, Golapgonj Upozilla of Sylhet district. A total of 120 people (male/female) were selected for this study. Data were l collected by a semi-structured questionnaire.
Result: 66(55%) of the respondents were smoker where as 54(45%) were non smoker. 117(97.5%) of the respondents heard about harmful effects of smoking.
Conclusion: Highest proportion of the respondents were smokers. It was found that most of the respondents started smoking from age 18-22 years. It has also been found that maximum respondents heard about the harmful effects of smoking and significant proportion of respondents said coughing was the harmful effect of smoking.
