Abstract
Oral hygiene and tooth infection has a deep impact on general health. A child bears permanent dentition after 12 years of age, which if not taken care may affect overall nutrition and growth of the body. This descriptive study was carried out among 120 high school going children with a view to assess oral hygiene practice and dental caries status. The study was carried out among two selected high school of South Surma Thana of Sylhet City from February 2024 to April 2024. Respondents were selected purposively and data were collected by semi-structured questionnaire. Among the respondents majority 46 (38.33%) belonged to the age group of 12-13 years 11 month of age, highest proportion were male 73 (60.83%). Regarding father’s occupation majority 42.5% were service holder and maximum 47.5% were housewife according to mother’s occupation. Out of 120 respondents maximum 96 (80%) used toothpaste and toothbrush as oral hygiene practice and only 24 (20%) used tooth powder and finger. Among 96 students majority 84 (87.5%) brushed teeth twice daily and 68 (70.83%) brushed before breakfast and before sleep and only 16 (16.66%) brushed after breakfast and before sleep. Brushing teeth after breakfast and before sleep is the ideal method. Regarding dental caries status, our study found 41.66% decayed, 58.33% missed and 65% filled teeth of the respondents.
