Abstract
Patients presenting with pain localised in the upper abdomen, which may be surgical or non-surgical in aetiology make up a significant portion of the hospitalized patients. Whenever these patients get admitted in medical wards, many a times it eventually become evident that they suffer from surgical conditions, thence needing transfer to the relevant ward. It is therefore necessary for consultant physicians to evaluate such patients on an urgent basis to ensure their proper management in hospitals. In this study spanning 1 year and involving 207 patients, we found that patients belonging to 21 ~ 30 years’ comprised the largest age-group (24.2%), while females comprised the larger gender-group (61.4%). Ultrasonography and Endoscopy were done in most of the patients to evaluate upper abdominal pain (71% & 56.5% respectively). Peptic ulcer disease, acute cholecystitis, and acute pancreatitis were the commonest revealed conditions (40%, 13%, 07% respectively).
