Abstract
Sex determination is necessary for the identification of unknown human from skeletal remains. Sexual dimorphic characters of femur can be studied both morphologically and metrically. Estimation of sexual dimorphism by morphometric analysis of femur is utmost important to establish a data in Bangladeshi population. The present study was conducted to establish the values of head vertical diameter of dry adult right human femur of Bangladeshi population to observe the gender differences. For this purpose, hundred (100) right femur, out of which 49 (49.0%) male and 51 (51.0%) female which are used for academic purpose was collected and a descriptive observational study was performed on Department of Anatomy, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, Sylhet fulfilling the inclusion criteria during the period of July 2018 to June 2019. Samples with any fragment or distortion were excluded. The head vertical diameter of femur was measured from the superior most point to the inferior most point on the border of articular surface of head by digital slide caliper and recorded. Then the sex was determined by discriminant function analysis technique The values of the mean head vertical diameter were significantly greater in male (5.41± 0.49 cm) than female (4.03±0.14 cm) (p<0.001).
Key Words: Femur, Head vertical diameter, Sex determination.
