Abstract
To assess the condition of service-delivery of any tertiary level health-care facility, we need to give equal emphasis to patients who attend the hospital outdoor-departments and patients who remain admitted at different wards. Appreciating the real-picture of morbidity at our community level would certainly enhance health-service-providers’ capacity to make a positive impression. Therefore, the aim of this study was to shed some light about the ‘unfamiliar’ disease-spectrum of our ‘familiar’ population. It was performed at the North East Medical College Hospital, from May 2013 up to April 2014, involving 1684 patients, who attended the out-patient department of the author. According to this study, the commonest symptoms were fever (15.38%), cough (14.43%), abdominal pain (14.25%), limb pain &/or weakness (12.94%), anorexia (10.03%), bowel complaint (9.79%), chest-pain (9.67%), bladder complaint (9.44%), generalized weakness (8.84%), and back-pain (7.66%). Whereas, the 5 most common diseases were hypertension (17.16%), urinary tract infection (10%), diabetes mellitus (7.72%), upper respiratory tract infection (6.17%), and ischaemic heart disease (5.64%). There was positive & significant correlation between HTN & DM, DM & IHD, and IHD & thyroid dysfunction.
