Abstract

This case control study was done at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital, from 1 July 2009 to 30th June 2011. A total 100 pregnant women were included in this study, of which there were 50 pregnant women with placenta previa enrolled as case and 50 pregnant women without placenta previa as control. The age [30.3 (SD 3.3) years vs 29.1 (SD 3.8) years; p >0.05 rfloor and parity [2.0 (SD 0.7) vs 1.9 (SD 0.9); p > 0.051 of the pregnant women of both groups were almost similar suggesting the study was age and parity matched. The gestational age was significantly lower in case group than that of control group [37.1 (SD 2.3) weeks vs 39.0 (SD 1.3); p < 0.01 ] In case group. 15 (30.0%) pregnant woman had history of caesarean delivery; while in control group, 6 (12.0%) pregnant woman had history of caesarean delivery. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05) The pregnant woman with previous caesarean delivery are three times more likely to develop previa in subsequent pregnancy than those without previous caesarean delivery ( OR = 3.143 , 95% of CI = 1.105 – 8.942 ) .
