Abstract

Objective
To assess the understanding of mothers of tribal community regarding preparation of home made oral saline and diet during diarrhoea.

Material and method: The study was conducted between March 2007 to June 2007. The place of study was Nokshiapunjee of Jaintapur Upozailla, Sylhet district. A total of 101 mothers were selected for the study. The data were collected by a structured questionnaire through face to face interview.

Results: 69% of the respondents had the correct knowledge of preparation of home made saline, 28% knew incorrectly, 3% were ignorant about the preparation. 84.2% children and 71.3% adults were provided normal diet during diarrhea.

Conclusion: The knowledge about the composition and process of preparation of home made saline and providing normal diet during diarrhea was though quite high but a significant proportion of mothers still lack the knowledge.
